Mitchell College is a private, independently-operated liberal arts college most noted for its Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Sport Management, and Business Administration programs that grants both baccalaureate and associate degrees. Located on the banks of the Thames River, in New London, Connecticut, USA, it was founded in 1938 on the former estate of Alfred Mitchell. Its campus offers such amenities as on-campus housing (including four multi-level, dormitory-style buildings and four residential river houses), a cafe, ice cream shop, preserve area known as "Mitchell Woods," multiple playing fields, and a beach.

On September 14, 1938, a group of New London, Connecticut citizens founded New London Junior College as a private, nonprofit, coeducational, two-year college in their community. The college opened its doors to the first freshman class on Sept. 18, 1939. During the fall term of 1942-43, nearly all of the college’s male students entered the armed services, and the United States Army and Coast Guard made urgent demands for the use of the college’s facilities. A special summer session for veterans began in June, 1946, and regular classes resumed in September of that year.

In 1950, trustees officially adopted the name Mitchell College to honor the descendants of the Alfred Mitchell family, principal benefactors of the College since its founding. In 1956, Mitchell College was awarded membership in the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Dr. Mary Ellen Jukoski was appointed to the presidency on March 1, 1995 after serving for nine months as Acting President. She had been Dean of the College since 1990. Dr. Jukoski retired as President of Mitchell College in June 2014. In recognition of her service and passion for the College, she was bestowed the honor of president emerita by the Board of Trustees.

In the 2013-14 academic year, Mitchell College celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a year-long program of campus events, lectures, and observances, including the development of a 75th anniversary timeline highlighting institutional milestones.

Dr. Janet L. Steinmayer became the seventh president of Mitchell College on July 1, 2014. Dr. Steinmayer is a seasoned leader with a diverse background in higher education and business. She is committed to building Mitchell as a leading force in ensuring that students, no matter what their learning style, will achieve academic and lifelong success.

Campus

Mitchell’s 68-acre campus sits in a scenic, historic residential section of the city and is divided into two distinct parts. The lower campus, from the stretch of sandy beaches of the Thames River to Montauk Avenue, contains most of the College’s academic and public buildings and the waterfront residence halls on Pequot Avenue.

The upper campus (to the west of Montauk Avenue) contains the four large residence halls, the gymnasium and the athletic playing fields. The upper campus also includes Alfred E. Mitchell Woods Park, given to Mitchell College to maintain as a recreational preserve for the public as well as for its own students. The park includes a pond, hiking trails, two baseball fields, sand volleyball court and tennis courts.

On the 75th Anniversary Founder's Day, September 19, 2013, Mitchell College officially opened a Study Lounge for Service Members and Veterans. Located in the Duquès Center in the heart of campus, the lounge offers a dedicated space for veterans and service members to meet, study and relax.

Student life

Located on a 68-acre waterfront campus, Mitchell College's over 860 students come from more than twenty states and three foreign countries.

Athletics

Mitchell's sports teams are known as the Mariners. Historically known as the Pequots, the name was changed in 2008 to comply with the mandate of the NCAA requiring a name change in order to continue postseason participation. (See the Native American mascot controversy in the United States.)

Participants in NCAA Division III athletics and members of the New England Collegiate Conference, the Mariners have a strong and prolific history of athletic success, especially in the women's basketball program. Mitchell College fields the following intercollegiate teams:

Men's Sports: Baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, sailing, soccer and tennis.

Women’s Sports: Cross country, basketball, sailing, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.

The Mitchell Mariners men's basketball team won the 2014 NECC Championship on March 1; Joshua Ford was named the tournament's most valuable player. In addition, the Mitchell Mariners have won the following NECC championships:

Clubs

There are more than 30 student organizations at Mitchell representing a wide variety of academic and general interest areas. Students are able and encouraged to start a club or organization if their particular passion is not represented yet.

First year experience

As part of Mitchell's First Year Experience (FYE) program for transitioning into college, first-year students are assigned to Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs) in their first semester according to a common academic interest or major. These groups explore the topics and issues related to their chosen path. Those who arrive at Mitchell undecided about their academic route are also grouped together to allow for a broader survey of options. Students are encouraged to communicate their unique perspective and make connections through co-curricular activities.

Veteran students

Mitchell College was selected again as a Military Friendly School for 2014, is an approved Yellow Ribbon School and is a member of Servicemembers Opportunity College. VP of Enrollment Management Susan D. Bibeau, Captain USCG (ret.) also serves as Mitchell's Admissions Veteran Liaison.

Thames Academy

Thames Academy is a residential post-graduate program for students with diagnosed learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or other health impairments who can benefit from a structured learning and living experience that prepares them for the transition to college or a career. Unlike conventional post-grad programs offered at college preparatory schools, Thames includes college level courses for credit. The program is set on the Mitchell College campus which has a recognized tradition of support for students with learning differences.
