Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (pronounced: [ʃaˈkiɾa isaˈβel meβa'ɾak riˈpol]; born February 2, 1977), known professionally as Shakira (English /ʃəˈkɪərə/, Spanish: [ʃaˈkiɾa]), is a Colombian singer-songwriter, dancer, record producer, choreographer, and model. Born and raised in Barranquilla, she began performing in school, demonstrating Latin, Arabic, and rock and roll influences and belly dancing abilities. Shakira released her first studio albums, Magia and Peligro, in the early 1990s, failing to attain commercial success; however, she rose to prominence in Latin America with her major-label debut, Pies Descalzos (1996), and her fourth album, Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998). Shakira entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry Service (2001), which has sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Its lead single, "Whenever, Wherever", topped the singles charts of various countries across the globe. Her success was solidified with her sixth and seventh albums Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005), the latter of which spawned the massive-hit, "Hips Don't Lie". Shakira's eighth studio effort She Wolf (2009) deviated from the Latin pop and pop rock musical styles that had dominated her previous work and instead explored genres like electropop and world. Although successful in numerous European and Latin American countries, it performed poorly in the United States. She returned to commercial prominence with the release of "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", the official anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which became a worldwide hit and the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time. With over 500 million views, its music video is the sixth most-watched video on YouTube. Shakira's global success continued with the release of her ninth album Sale el Sol; it garnered critical acclaim and peaked atop multiple record charts. Since 2013, Shakira has served as a coach on the American version of The Voice, although she temporarily left the series during the fifth season. Shakira has won many awards including five MTV Video Music Awards, two Grammy Awards, ten Latin Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, twenty-eight Billboard Latin Music Awards, and has also been nominated for a Golden Globe. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, having sold over seventy million albums and fifty million singles. Her US album sales stand at 9.9 million. Outside of her work in the music industry, Shakira is also involved in philanthropic activities through charity work and benefit concerts, notably her Pies Descalzos Foundation, her performance at the "Clinton Global Initiative" created by former US President Bill Clinton, and her invitation to the Oval Office by US President Barack Obama in February 2010 to discuss early childhood development. Sale el sol (English: The Sun Comes Out) is the ninth studio album by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, released on October 19, 2010, by Epic Records. The Sun Comes Out World Tour (also known as the Sale el Sol World Tour) was the fifth concert tour by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, launched in support of her eighth and ninth studio albums, She Wolf (2009) and Sale El Sol (2010). The tour was divided into three legs: a North American leg, a European leg, and a Latin American leg. The North American leg visited cities such as New York, Houston, and Los Angeles. The European leg appeared in cities such as Lyon, London, and Paris. It also visited countries such as Croatia, Russia, Spain and Switzerland. The Latin American leg of the tour was a part of the Pop Festival, which was heralded as an initiative to bring international music stars to Latin America. Venues at countries like Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico were decided for the Latin American leg to visit. The setlist of the tour was composed of songs taken primarily from Shakira's ninth studio album Sale el Sol and She Wolf (2009); the other songs were taken from her previous studio efforts. The stage was shaped like the letter "T" to enable maximum amount of viewers to see Shakira easily. A large screen was set behind the stage, on which various visuals, designed by entertainment branding agency Loyalkaspar, were projected. For the performances, Shakira mainly wore a mesh gold crop top coupled with skin-tight leather pants. Other attires Shakira wore during the concert shows included a hooded pink gown, a flamenco-skirt, and a feathery blue dress. The concert shows were well received by critics, many of whom praised the charisma Shakira displayed during the performances. Commercially, the tour was a success. It ranked at number 40 on Pollstar's 2010 year-end "Top 50 North American Tours" list as it grossed a total of $16.9 million in the continent, with total ticket sales amounting up to 524,723. The tour was a bigger success worldwide, ranking at number 20 on Pollstar's 2011 "Top 25 Worldwide Tours" with a total gross of $53.2 million and ticket sales amounting up to 692,064. A live album of the show held at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris, France, was released as Shakira: Live from Paris, on December 5, 2011.
