Host city
Helsinki, Finland was elected as the host city after Bob Barker announced he would serve as host for 1988 pageant. On January 3, 1988, the mayor of Helsinki, Raimo Ilaskivi, announced that his city would not host the 1988 pageant due to critical problems. On January 4, 1988, the day after Helsinki cancelled to host the 1988 pageant, the mayor of Taipei, Hsu Shui-teh, announced that his city would serve as host the 1988 pageant.
