American singer and songwriter Madonna has recorded songs for thirteen studio albums, three compilation albums, two remix albums and eight soundtrack albums. She has also been featured on songs on other artists' respective albums, including duets and as background vocalist. After being associated with music groups like Breakfast Club[1] and Emmy, Madonna signed with Sire Records (an auxiliary label of Warner Bros. Records) in 1982 and released her self-titled debut album the following year.[2] She is the solo writer of most of the songs on the record. Madonna was followed by Like a Virgin in 1984, where the singer collaborated with other songwriters. From her next release, True Blue, Madonna followed up with a series of commercially successful albums, including the Grammy Award winners Ray of Light (1998) and Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005).[3] She collaborated with a number of songwriters on all her studio albums and has written and produced most of her songs, with many of them reaching number one on the record charts, including "Like a Virgin", "Into the Groove", "Papa Don't Preach", "Like a Prayer", "Vogue", "Frozen", "Music", "Hung Up", and "4 Minutes".
Madonna has also recorded songs for film soundtracks, starting in 1985 with the release of "Into the Groove" which was for her major film role in Desperately Seeking Susan. She followed it with songs for films like With Honors as well as her own Who's That Girl. Her songs for the 1990 film Dick Tracy saw her collaborate with composer Stephen Sondheim as well as duets with actors Warren Beatty and Mandy Patinkin. The songs for the 1996 musical film, Evita, saw Madonna sing music composed by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, recording the tracks with actors Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Pryce. Her most recent song recorded for a film was "Masterpiece", for her directorial venture W.E.[4]
Other musical endeavors from Madonna includes poems she recorded for albums, like "Bittersweet" by the Persian poet Rumi, read for contemporary spiritualist Deepak Chopra's album, A Gift Of Love: Music inspired by the Love Poems of Rumi.[5] She also recorded "If You Forget Me" by Pablo Neruda, for the soundtrack of the 1994 film, Il Postino: The Postman.[6] Madonna's recorded music encompasses background vocals given for other artists, starting from "Born to Be Alive" by Patrick Hernandez (1979), to artists like John Benitez, Nick Kamen, Nick Scotti, Donna De Lory. She has also collaborated with singers Ricky Martin, Britney Spears, Annie Lennox, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., Justin Timberlake and Timbaland.
