Eukanuba ("You-Kan-Noo-Bah") is a brand name of dog food and cat food, owned and manufactured by Mars, Inc, who also makes Pedigree pet foods. Procter and Gamble sold Eukanuba in July, 2014. The company produces 17 different types for dogs, based on age, breed, and performance area, as well as 13 formulas for cats, including kitten, adult maintenance, hairball, sensitive stomach and weight control, indoor and outdoor, and mature.

History

In 1969, Paul Iams wanted to find a name to differentiate the new formula from other Iams products. Iams chose to name this new formula "Eukanuba", a term originated by jazz era personality Hoagy Carmichael, meaning "the tops" or "something supreme".

Manufacturing

Leipsic manufacturing plant

The Eukanuba manufacturing plant at Leipsic, Ohio is P&G's largest dog food plant and it goes beyond the USDA requirements by requiring an electronic system test value. At every stage of the process, metal detectors make sure that there are no foreign objects in the bags. Before it moves onto the trucks, a series of numbers are burned onto the bag by laser Batch coding machine. The numbers indicate the day and the hour the food was made by using the DD/MM/YYYY format, so that in the event of a recall, the bags can be quickly traced and pulled from the shelves.

Ingredients

The ingredients in Eukanuba products contain both animal and animal by-products, a dry rendered product of slaughterhouse waste. Most of the ingredients come from the United States, but a limited amount of nutritional supplements are imported from countries such as China.

A list of the ingredients in the Adult Maintenance Dry Dog Food:

Chicken, chicken by-product meal, cornmeal, ground whole grain sorghum, brewers rice, dried beet pulp, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a source of vitamin E), chicken flavor, ground whole grain barley, dried egg product, fish oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a source of vitamin E), potassium chloride, salt, flax meal, sodium hexametaphosphate, Fructooligosaccharides, minerals (ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, potassium iodide, cobalt carbonate), dl-methionine, choline chloride, vitamins (ascorbic acid, vitamin A acetate, calcium pantothenate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), vitamin B12 supplement, niacin, riboflavin supplement (source of vitamin B2), pyridoxine hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), inositol, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid), calcium carbonate, vitamin e supplement, brewers dried yeast, beta-carotene, rosemary extract.

Eukanuba is the primary sponsor of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, one of the three most prestigious dog shows in the United States. The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship takes place annually in December and hosts more than 3,000 champion dogs and handlers with competitions in agility, obedience, dock-jumping, breed-specific, and best in show.

In 2008, the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship began hosting the Eukanuba World Challenge, which includes dogs from more than 50 countries around the world competing.

Eukanuba is a sponsor of the Teva Mountain Games.

Eukanuba is the title sponsor for the Eukanuba Stage Stop Race in Jackson, Wyoming announced in July, 2015; formerly the International Pedigree® Stage Stop Sled Dog Race.
