eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality is a metropolitan municipality created in 2000 that includes the city of Durban, South Africa and surrounding towns. eThekwini is one of the 11 districts of KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The majority of its 3,442,361 people speak Zulu (2001 census). It was formed from seven formerly independent local councils and tribal land.
Contents
Etymology
The derivation of the word eThekwini is debated,[4][5] the name is said to mean either ‘lagoon’ or ‘the one-testicled one’, referring to the appearance of the Durban Bay.[6]
In an 1859 Zulu grammar book, Bishop Colenso asserted that the root word iTeku means "bay of the sea" and noted that the locative form, eTekwini, was used as a proper name for Durban.[7]
An 1895 English-Zulu dictionary translates the base word iteku as "bay", "creek", "gulf" or "sinus",[8] while a 1905 Zulu-English dictionary notes that eTekwini is used for Durban.[9]

eThekwini is surrounded by:
- iLembe (DC29) to the north
- the Indian ocean to the east
- Ugu (DC21) to the south
- Umgungundlovu (DC22) to the west

Politics
The municipal council consists of 205 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation. 103 councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 103 wards, while the remaining 102 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
Election results
In the election of 18 May 2011 the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of 61% of the vote and 126 seats on the council. The second-largest party was the Democratic Alliance (DA), which won 21% of the vote and 43 seats. The Minority Front, the Inkatha Freedom Party and the National Freedom Party also won notable shares of the vote.

Non-party politics
The shack dwellers' movement Abahlali baseMjondolo has members in more than 30 settlements in eThekwini. Abahlali have campaigned vigorously against evictions, against forced removals and for basic services and ongoing democratic consultation. At times there has been serious conflict between Abahlali and the municipal government.
