Phoenix is an Indian township, northwest of central Durban. It was established as a township in 1976, but it has a long history of Indian occupation. It is associated with the Phoenix Settlement, built by Mahatma Gandhi.[2]

Initially a sugarcane estate and since the mid-1970s a municipal housing development for the Indian community beginning with unit 4-Stonebridge. Sections were initially labelled as precincts and later renamed with proper street addresses

They are many religious places such has Masjids,Temples and Churches presence in phoenix. One of many Musjid organization who provides help to the local public is Al Amin Masjid which is situated in Longcroft (unit 8).
Media and communication
Local news is distributed via local newspaper such as the Rising Sun and Phoenix Tabloid. In terms of communication 99% of Phoenix is covered by either wireless internet connections such as 3G/HSDPA or have access to a landline/ADSL. There are various wi-fi hotspots in Southgate and Longcroft.Local news spreads very rapidly by word of mouth by the local aunties
Health and education
Public education in the Phoenix area is provided by various Primary and Secondary Schools,one Technikon and various F.E.T colleges. There is one major government hospital and one private.Various smaller clinics can be found.
Shopping centres
Phoenix Plaza, Gem City, and Starwood Mall are some of the few shopping centres that can be found in Phoenix's CBD. These centres cater for various needs from top brand shops to local products. They are many business owners in Phoenix.
The GateWay Theatre of Shopping is also easily accessible, 15 min from Phoenix
Phoenix Plaza
Phoenix Plaza owned by Vukile Property Fund is a shopping centre situated north of Durban in the beautifully diverse province of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The centre is home to more than 105 independent and national retailers with Shoprite as its anchor tenant caters for the locals of the Phoenix and surrounding communities.
The shopping centre totalling a gross lettable area of 24, 341.58m² was built in the year 1993.
Transport
One main means of public transport is found in taxis and the other in the rail system. Phoenix does have its own railway station. Durban international airport is a 15 minute drive.
Industrial sector
Phoenix also plays host to a huge industrial area with big companies such as SAB Miller, which produces beverages in the Coca-Cola family..
