It was previously inhabited by both Kurds and Assyrians. The Assyrians of Darbandokeh came right after the Assyrian genocide that took place within the Ottoman Empire. They came from the Shamezdin region, located within Hakkari, Turkey. As a result of forced migration in the late 20th century, today no Assyrians remain in the village of Darbandokeh. Many of them are now living in Australia, the United States, Sweden and Canada.

Darbandokeh is the birthplace of many renowned Assyrians. It is where the Patriarch of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, Mar Dinkha IV, was born. It is also the birthplace of the Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance, Emanuel Kamber.
