Makhmur (Kurdish: Mexmûr, Arabic: مخمور) is a town in Iraq. It is part of Makhmur District in Erbil Governorate. Before 1991 the large district of Makhmur was part of Ninawa Governorate, but after Makhmur district became a part of Erbil Governorate. Makhmur is mainly populated by Kurds and Arabs. During the 2014 ISIL crisis, the town was taken over by ISIL militants before being regained again by combined Kurdish forces,[1] led by the Kurdistan Worker's Party.[2] A volunteer civilian militia to defend the town in the future was started in response.[3]
