A video game clone is copy or imitation of a video game already existing, especially when designed to simulate it. For computer hardware clones, see Category:Computer hardware clones.
The production of video games that closely resembled other, previously published games, was common during the early 8-bit computing era when legal action was rare. The themes cloned usually were successful and iconic, such as the myriad Space Invaders or Frogger clones, for example. In later gaming history, the term 'clone' often refers to a style of play that becomes a genre of its own. A Doom clone or a GTA clone would not necessarily be an almost carbon-copy of those games. A game is not considered a clone when it is an official sequel or remake.
