Overview
As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, No. 146 Bishnupur (Vidhan Sabha constituency) (SC) is composed of the following: Bishnupur I community development block, and Asuti I, Asuti II, Chatta and Raspunja gram panchayats of Thakurpukur Mahestala community development block.[1]
Bishnupur (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is part of No. 21 Diamond Harbour (Lok Sabha constituency).[1]While Bishnupur West was part of Diamond Harbour (Lok Sabha constituency), Bishnupur East was part of Jadavpur (Lok Sabha constituency).[2]

In the 2006 state assembly elections,[16] Ananda Kumar Biswas of CPI(M) won the Bishnupur East (SC) assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Dilip Mondal of Trinamool Congress. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Dilip Mondal of Trinamool Congress defeated Ananda Kumar Biswas of CPI(M) in 2001.[15]Ananda Kumar Biswas of CPI(M) defeated Mahadeb Naskar of Congress in 1996.[14] Sundar Naskar of CPI(M) defeated Ram Krishna Bar of Congress in 1991,[13]Ardhendu Sekhar Naskar of Congress in 1987,[12]Mahadeb Naskar of Congress in 1982[11]and Ram Krishna Bar of Congress in 1977.[10][21]

In the 2009 by-elections, caused by the death of the sitting MLA, Madan Mitra of Trinamool Congress won the Bishunpur West assembly seat defeating Iskander Hossain of CPI(M).[17]In the 2006[16]state assembly elections, Rathin Sarkar of CPI(M) defeated Madan Mitra of Trinamool Congress. Subrata Bakshi of Trinamool Congress defeated Rathin Sarkar of CPI(M) in 2001.[15] Sankar Saran Sarkar of CPI(M) defeated Aruna Ghosh Dastidar of Congress in 1996.[14]Kashi Nath Adak of CPI(M) defeated Aruna Ghosh Dastidat of Congress in 1991,[13] and Shaik Moquebul Haque in 1987.[12]Provash Chandra Roy of CPI(M) defeated Niranjan Ghosh of Congress in 1982[11]and Moaue Haque Shaik of Congress in 1977.[10][22]
