Y.C./Northwest Christian History

The Yuma Catholic and Northwest Christian rivalry began in 2009. While it didn’t start out as a rivalry it soon became one of the most intense, first playing in 2009 with 26-21 loss to Northwest Christian, then a 14-10 loss in 2010 regular season and a 30-27 loss in the State Championship game it soon became one. In 2011 they would have a rematch of the State Championship game in the opening week of the season with Yuma Catholic once again losing 13-6. As luck would have it The Yuma Catholic Shamrocks and The Northwest Christian Crusaders would meet once again in the State championship game with Y.C. finally getting the win 21-19. In 2012 they once again opened the season with Northwest winning again 16-14 and meeting again this time in the State Semi-Finals with Northwest again winning 21-17 on their way to another State Title. In 2013 they wouldn’t play until the final week of the season with Northwest rallying a comeback, winning 26-14 the largest margin of victory of 12 points, Up until then no team won by more than 7 points; The Shamrocks would go on to win the State Title but for the first time in 3 years the two teams would not play in the playoffs. 2014 would bring a change to the rivalry with Y.C. winning in the Final week of the season 63-46 a 17 point win the largest yet and then Again in the State Semi-Final 56-29 a 27 point win the largest in the rivalry. The Shamrocks would go on to a 14-0 season winning back to back State Titles. Since 2010 the last 5 State Championship have been won by either Northwest Christian (2 Titles) or Yuma Catholic (3 Titles). The 2015 season saw Yuma Catholic beating Northwest at home with a score of 27-7 in week 8, but later suffering a major and unexpected upset in the State Quarterfinals at YC's Ricky Gwynn Stadium with a score of NWC - 48, YC - 0, becoming the largest victory in the series' history. Northwest went on to win the semi-final game vs. Snowflake, but lost against Pusch Ridge Christian Academy by a score of 14-7 in the State Final. For the last 5 years, either YC or NWC had won the DV State Title, but Division IV proved to be more of a challenge for NW, although YC successfully competed against the competitors in DIV.
