History

Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda started in 1988 response to the growing demand for Welsh medium education in the area. To this day it remains the only Welsh Secondary School in the Rhondda, with around 1,000 students. Pupils who attend the school come from all over the Rhondda, from the five Welsh Primary Schools:

General

We aim to ensure the best for our pupils in every aspect of school life. Our enthusiastic, committed staff, who give above and beyond what’s asked, work tirelessly to ensure our young people reach the best standards they can in every aspect of school life, so that they are prepared for the future and lifelong learning. Every individual is important to us here in Cymer, and we aim to develop every skill, competency, and ability, by providing broad and exciting educational opportunities appropriate to the twenty first century. We’re proud of the fluent bilingualism of our pupils, as they prepare for their future. Welshness and respect is at the core of our school life here. Respect for ourselves, others, and our environment. Respect for our language, our past, and our unique culture. We are proud of each other’s achievements and our identity. We aim to create a civilised community which promotes the welfare and development of all. Our many partnerships are important to us. Our close partnership with the home is essential in order to ensure the highest standards in all aspects of the school’s work, and coherent support for the pupils. We wish our pupils every happiness and success as a member of the Cymer family.

Cymer in the media

Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda appeared in popular Welsh television show "Pam fi Duw?" on Welsh Television channel S4C. The long running show gained a large Rhondda fanbase, from both English and Welsh speaking people, because it was featured in a place they knew. For seven weeks of the year HTV used the school campus, and 200 of the schools pupils as extras.

Even more recently the School again featured on S4C in "Cymer Fi", which followed six students as they completed various challenges and tasks. The program followed the students as they went through singing coaching, quitting smoking, behavioural problems and rugby aspirations. Ysgol Gyfun Cymer is a Welsh-speaking school with high standards, as proven by the latest excellent inspection report.

Cymer rugby

Cymer has a tradition with rugby union and has a number of former pupils playing in the Welsh leagues. A number of pupils have reached international level at different age groups with former pupil Geraint Morris playing for Welsh regional side The Celtic Warriors in the European Heineken cup.

Three sixth form students (Geraint Evans, Liam H. Thomas, and Ashley Bateman) were selected for the Wales U/18 Rugby League squad. Evans and Bateman played against the North of England side in Manchester (November 2006). Evans also represented Wales U/19 against Australia (November 2006). Will Grif John was selected for the Welsh rugby union U20s squad and turned professional for the Cardiff Blues.
