Background and recording
In an interview with Complex, Ant Clemons explained that the song was based on a conversation about God he had with West.[1] According to Clemons, the song was recorded five days prior to Sunday Service's performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 21, 2019.[2][3] West announced "Water" as a new track for his when upcoming album.[4] "Water" was the ninth track on the original Jesus Is King tracklist, revealed by Kim Kardashian in August 2019.[5] Before the albums officially release on October 25, West announced on Twitter what the mixes on "Everything We Need", "Follow God" and "Water" need to be fixed.[6] The track contains an interpolation of "We're All Water", written by Yoko Ono and performed by Ono and John Lennon, and contains samples of "Blow Job", written and performed by Bruce Haack.[7]
Critical reception
"Water" received mixed reviews from critics. Rawiya Kameir (Pitchfork) wrote that the bassline of the song "feels like a consolation, not a highlight".[8]
