Ulutiu (/ˈl.t./ oo-LOO-tee-oo)[2][3][4] is the father of the Giant Kin races and one of the many gods in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game. He is the god of glaciers, polar environments, and arctic dwellers.

In the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, Ulutiu is worshipped by the Arctic Ulutiun peoples of the Great Glacier and the Sea of Moving Ice off Icewind Dale.

Publication history

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition (1989-1999)

Ulutiu is first mentioned in the book The Great Glacier (1992). His relationship to the gods of the giants was explored in Giantcraft (1995).[5]

Ulutiu is further detailed in Powers & Pantheons (1997).[2]

Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition (2000-2007)

Ulutiu appears in 3rd edition in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book (2001),[6] and was further described in Faiths and Pantheons (2002).[3]

A non-Realms specific version of Ulutiu appeared in the book Frostburn (2004).[1]

Description

Ulutiu is depicted as a very large man with a sullen appearance. Ulutiu's symbol is a necklace of blue and white ice crystals.[1] His divine realm is where he sleeps in the Astral Plane.

Relationships

Ulutiu voluntarily exiled himself from Faerûn when his affair with the giant goddess Othea was discovered by Annam, and he sank into the Cold Ocean and has slumbered ever since. It is stated that Auril, the frostmaiden, is siphoning power from him as he sleeps, continually weakening him so that eventually he will die and she may subsume his portfolio.[3]

Worshipers

Ulutiu's followers include druids, historians and frostfell rangers.[1]

Clergy

Despite his slumber, Ulutiu is still able to grant spells to his followers. Ulutiu's clergy pray for their spells at midday. clergy often multiclass as rangers.[3]
