Anthony Peter "Tony" Gale (born 19 November 1959) is an English former professional footballer who is now a regular pundit on Soccer Saturday and Sky Sports News HQ. He also contributes a column for the British tabloid newspaper The Sun.
As a player he played as a defender from 1977 until 1998 notably in the Premier League for Blackburn Rovers where he was amongst the squad that won the title in 1995. He also played for Fulham, West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Maidenhead United.
Playing career
In his playing career he was a defender, with long-term spells at Fulham and West Ham United, contentiously being sent-off, by referee Keith Hackett, in the 1991 FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest for a foul on Gary Crosby.[1] This was seen by West Ham fans as an unfair dismissal, and as the reason for their 4-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in that game and ending their chances of a first FA Cup final since 1980 - it would be another 15 years before West Ham reached the final. He was also part of the West Ham side which finished third in the league in 1986, two years after his £200,000 transfer from Fulham.[2]
After leaving West Ham, he had a single season with Blackburn Rovers, helping them win the 1994-95 Premier League title before completing his career with a season at Crystal Palace, where he played just twice.[3]
Media career
Gale has been heard commentating on Premier League games for Premier League Productions, a venture of IMG Sports Media who produce, package and broadcast the live production of games for the Premier League for international broadcasters.
Gale has also contributed a regular column for West Ham's official website, WHUFC.com, along with a fortnightly column for Fulham's official website. He is also the chairman of Ryman Division One South side, Walton Casuals.[4]
