History
The original station building of knapped flint was constructed by Norwich & Brandon Railway in 1845; the brickwork extension dates from 1889, and the year is engraved on its facade. The well-preserved station complex is a Grade II listed building.
Thetford station was once also the terminus for a branch to Swaffham which branched off at the next station along the line (Roudham Junction). That branch was closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching Axe. The other branch (Thetford to Bury St Edmunds line) ran south, calling at the town's other station (Thetford Bridge) which closed to passengers in 1953.[1]
Service
Generally, there are two trains per hour eastbound to Norwich (one non-stop, the other calling at Attleborough & Wymondham) while westbound there is an hourly service to Cambridge (Abellio Greater Anglia) and an hourly service to Liverpool Lime Street via Peterborough, Nottingham and Manchester Piccadilly (East Midlands Trains). Both westbound services call at Ely, where connections are also available for Stansted Airport and both main London termini.
