The New Year is a 2010 American drama film directed by Brett Haley. Premiering at the 2010 Sarasota Film Festival, it won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature in the festival.[1] The film, about a young woman who has dropped out of college to care for her ill father, is Haley's directorial debut and stars Trieste Kelly Dunn as Sunny.

Reception

Critical reception

The film had a positive response from critics. Based on 5 reviews, review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 100% fresh rating.[2] Critics praised the performance of Dunn within the film, with The New York Times's Andy Webster noting that Dunn was "smart and attractive [and] steadily, wordlessly conveys her character’s internal struggle."[3] Steve Dollar, writing for The Wall Street Journal, states that "Trieste Kelly Dunn carries Brooklyn-based director Brett Haley's debut with a face made for the subtle calibrations of emotional conflict."[4]
