History
Background as opponents
The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) made their WWE main roster television debut in May 2010.[8] They are fourth-generation wrestlers within the Anoaʻi family from Samoa.[9] Roman Reigns, a third-generation wrestler from the same Anoaʻi family,[9] made his WWE main roster television debut in November 2012 at the Survivor Series pay-per-view alongside Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins,[10] with the trio later assuming the name of The Shield.[11]
As part of The Shield, Reigns wrestled against The Usos over 25 times on WWE television from May 2013 to January 2014, several of these were six-man tag team matches where The Usos partnered with other wrestlers including Christian, Kofi Kingston, Mark Henry and Rey Mysterio.[12] Their feud saw The Shield resorting to post-match attacks in May;[13] The Usos unsuccessfully challenging for the WWE Tag Team Championship held by Rollins and Reigns at the July Money in the Bank pre-show, which saw Reigns pinning one of The Usos;[14] Reigns being pinned for the first time on the main roster courtesy of The Usos as The Shield lost an eleven-on-three handicap elimination match on Raw in September;[15] and Reigns being the sole survivor of a Survivor Series match at Survivor Series in November, when The Usos were on the opposing team and Reigns pinned Jimmy Uso.[16]
After The Shield disbanded in June 2014,[17] Reigns finally acknowledged being part of the Anoaʻi family on the January 26, 2015 episode of Raw, admitting that he was related to Rikishi and The Usos.[18] Former WWE writer Kevin Eck said that WWE executives Vince McMahon and Triple H initially (when Reigns was still part of The Shield) refused to acknowledge Reigns' Samoan heritage as they thought it would damage Reigns' mystique.[19] Reigns then became protective of The Usos; during a SmackDown tag team turmoil match in February 2015, Reigns admonished his tag team partner Daniel Bryan for being too aggressive against their opponents, The Usos.[20]
Occasional teaming with Dean Ambrose (2015)
In the latter half of 2015, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and The Usos occasionally formed a team when Reigns and Ambrose were outnumbered during their feud with The Wyatt Family in September 2015,[21] Jimmy Uso (acknowledging familial ties) allied with Reigns and Ambrose in a match against The New Day, but said match was interrupted by The Wyatt Family attacking Jimmy.[22] On the November 2, 2015 episode of Raw, Jey Uso returned from a legitimate injury (after six months out) as The Usos joined Reigns' team (with Ambrose and Ryback) in a five-on-five traditional Survivor Series match; Reigns and Ambrose survived the match, but both Usos were eliminated.[23] In late November to early December 2015, The Usos teamed together with Reigns and Ambrose in several multi-man matches against The League of Nations group and other opponents.[12]
Establishing The Bloodline (2016–present)
In April 2016, AJ Styles earned a title shot for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against champion Roman Reigns,[24] while the debuting Karl Anderson and the returning Luke Gallows attacked The Usos on their first week together on Raw,[25] and assaulted Reigns on their second week on Raw.[26]
On the April 25 episode of Raw, Reigns and The Usos agreed to an alliance, and Reigns single-handedly saved them from a post-match attack by Anderson and Gallows; later on the same episode, Styles agreed to ally with Anderson and Gallows if they fought fairly, but When Anderson and Gallows conducted another post-match attack on Reigns, Styles saved Reigns, who attacked him in response as Reigns was laid out when Styles retaliated.[27] At Payback, Anderson and Gallows interfered in the (restarted) no disqualification Reigns-Styles world title match, which caused The Usos to arrive to brawl with them and, after Reigns twice attacked the four interfering men, he pinned Styles to retain his championship.[28]
This led to a feud between the trio of Anderson, Gallows and Styles and the trio of Reigns and The Usos; after Styles' trio beat Reigns' trio on the May 2 episode of Raw, Anderson and Gallows wanted Styles to hit Reigns with a chair, but Styles refused, resulting in The Usos attacking Styles from behind with a chair, and Styles retaliating with the chair, but ultimately, Reigns hit a powerbomb on Styles through the broadcast table.[29] On the same week's SmackDown, the two trios had a rematch where Reigns pinned Anderson.[30] On the next week's Raw, Reigns and The Usos defeated The Club (Anderson, Gallows and Styles) in a six-man elimination tag team match: Jey Uso, then Anderson, Jimmy Uso, and Gallows were pinned, and finally Styles was disqualified when Anderson interfered to prevent Reigns repeating his announce table powerbomb on Styles.[5] On the May 12 episode of SmackDown, The Usos defeated Anderson and Gallows via disqualification, but Anderson and Gallows came up top in the post-match brawl with neither Reigns nor Styles appearing to help.[31] On May 16, 2016, WWE christened the trio of Reigns and The Usos as "The Bloodline";[4] while on Raw that day, The Usos defeated Anderson and Gallows via pinfall.[32] At Extreme Rules, The Usos were defeated by Gallows and Anderson in a tornado tag team match, but Reigns was able to retain his title against Styles in an Extreme Rules match.[33]
