Strome is a hamlet in east-central Alberta, Canada within Flagstaff County. It is located on Highway 13, approximately 58 km (36 mi) east of the City of Camrose. The hamlet was originally incorporated as a village on February 3, 1910.[1] It dissolved to become a hamlet under the jurisdiction of Flagstaff County on January 1, 2016.[2] Strome's name is believed to come from Stromeferry in Ross & Cromarty, Scotland.[4]
History
Strome began developing as a farming community in 1905. Max Knoll opened the first post office, under the name of Knollton, and set up the first general store in late 2015. The name of the post office was changed to Strome on July 1, 1906. A hotel, a hardware store, and a church followed. Strome incorporated as a village on February 3, 1910.[5]
Demographics
In the 2011 Census, Strome had a population of 228 living in 100 of its 117 total dwellings, a -9.5% change from its 2006 population of 252. With a land area of 0.92 km2 (0.36 sq mi), it had a population density of 247.8/km2 (641.9/sq mi) in 2011.[3]
In 2006, Strome had a population of 252 living in 114 dwellings, a 7.7% decrease from 2001. The village has a land area of 0.92 km2 (0.36 sq mi) and a population density of 274.5/km2 (711/sq mi).[6]
