Afroza Sultana Ratna (known by her stage name Shabana) is a Bangladeshi film actress.[2]

Early life and career

Shabana's family is originated in Dabuwa Raozan area in Chittagong. She started her acting career in 1960s. She first acted in film Natun Sur in 1962 at the age of 9. She first appeared in an Urdu film Chakori in 1967. It was directed by Ehtesham.

She acted in over 300 films in Bengali and Urdu, and one in Hindi, titled "Shatru" where she starred opposite eminent film actor Rajesh Khanna. The film was directed by Pramod Chakravarty.[citation needed] She acted with actors like Nadeem, Razzak, Bulbul Ahmed, Prabir Mitra, Shawkat Akbar, Subhash Dutta, Rahman, Syed Hasan Imam, Uzzal, Alamgir, Jashim, ATM Shamsuzzaman, Khasru, Sohel Rana, Mahmud Koli, Ilyas Kanchan, Wasim (actor), Humayun Faridi, Javed Sheikh and Rajesh Khanna. Shabana is cited as one of the foundational actresses of the Bangladeshi film industry since its inception even though her career began in Pakistan. Her career spanning 12 National Film awards has encompassed four decades, the longest of any known actress in the Bangladeshi film industry.

Shabana-Nadeem pair

Shabana first acted with Pakistani film actor Nadeem in her debut Urdu film Chakori in 1967. Her cosmopolitan roles included Anari, Chotey Sahab, Chand aur Chandni and Chand Suraj - an experimental film by Pakistani director Mustafiz, similar in technique to Robert Altman's latter-day, "Shortcuts", the first half was devoted to the relationship between Waheed Murad and Rozina, while later unconnected interludes were focused on Shabana and evergreen co-star Nadeem.

Shabana's last East Pakistani movie was Andhi (joint venture) in 1991. She resurfaced in the 80's, when co-productions among South Asian countries became a popular style of film making including roles in Basera (1984) and Aandhi (1991) again all with Nadeem. She was also starred in Pakistan-Turkey co-production film Halchal with Pakistani actor Javed Sheikh in 1986.

Personal life

Shabana left acting in 1998 and left for USA to permanently live with her family members.[1] She is married to Bangladeshi film producer Wahid Sadik since 1973. She has two daughters and one son.
