Sam Alexander Northeast (born 16 October 1989 in Ashford, Kent) is an English cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm off spinner. He is currently contracted by Kent County Cricket Club.
Career
Northeast first came to prominence when as a 13-year-old schoolboy he scored 19 hundreds in a term at Harrow School, continuing the same form in the next year when he won a place in the 1st XI at the age of 14. Kent sent coaches to work with him rather than asking him to travel to Canterbury, and he picked up a string of national awards, including a Bunbury scholarship.
In 2005 he made his Kent 2nd XI debut against Durham and scored 96, as well as playing for England Under-15s. In 2006 he was included in a strong Getty XI against the touring Sri Lankans, and he cracked 62 against an attack including international bowlers Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan. In July 2007 he scored a hundred against Eton at Lords for Harrow.
An allround sportsman, Northeast was a national schools rackets champion, a county squash player and cross-country runner, and was offered county trials in football and rugby. He made his Kent first team debut in a List A match against a touring Sri Lanka 'A' team in July 2007, although the match was abandoned before he had the chance to bat. He went on to make his first class debut for Kent on 19 September 2007 in their final LV County Championship game of the season, against Durham at the St Lawrence Ground.
In July 2009 Northeast showed good form for England Under 19s against Bangladesh. In the 2nd Test match at Derby he scored 107 in the first innings and 149 in the second innings. He followed this with scores of 123, 41 and 62 in the One Day Internationals, top scoring on each occasion.
In 2012 Northeast scored 880 runs at an average of 55, despite at times being relegated to the 2nd XI. He was awarded his county cap in August[1] and was named Kent's Batsman of the Year after scoring over 1400 runs in all competitions. At the end of the season he signed a new contract for a further year. He scored his first limited over century on 20 June 2013, making 115 against the Sussex Sharks, in a world record run chase in a 40 over match.[2]
Northeast was made Kent’s vice-captain in 2014,[3] sometimes taking the reins from Rob Key,[4] and is touted as a future captain by former Kent captain David Fulton[5] and Darren Stevens.[6] During the 2015 season Northeast captained the county in limited overs cricket[7] as well as occasionally captaining the side in the County Championship.[8] He scored 2,007 runs in all formats and was chosen in the Professional Cricketers' Association Team of 2015.[9]
Northeast was appointed as Kent captain for the 2016 season on 30 September 2015.[10]
