Revue Biblique is an academic journal published by the École Biblique, an institute of a French community of Dominicans based in Jerusalem. The journal was established in 1892 by Pierre Batiffol and Marie-Joseph Lagrange.

History

The Revue biblique was created in 1892 by the Dominican monk Lagrange, who had just created the École Biblique two years earlier. The initial title of the journal was Revue biblique internationale. During World War II, under German occupation, the journal changed its title and became Vivre et penser. Recherches d'exégèse et d'histoire, before resuming its first title once the war was over.

The editorial line of the Revue biblique was determined at its creation by the approach of Father Lagrange, who attempted to reconcile traditional biblical exegesis with the discoveries of archaeology and the human sciences that were booming in the second half of the 19th century. This led him to publish in the Revue articles relating to secular sciences such as archaeology and philology in addition to texts of pure exegesis.
