Pathworks
Pathworks was the tradename used by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) of Maynard, Massachusetts for a family of software[1] that eased the interoperation of Digital's computers with personal computers. It originally consisted of both client software and server software. The client software was available for DOS systems, Windows systems and Mac computer systems.
The server part of Pathworks ran on VAX/VMS, Ultrix and Digital Unix and enabled a DEC VMS (VAX or Alpha) or VMScluster or Ultrix/Digital Unix system to act as a file and print server for client IBM PC compatible and Macintosh workstations. Pathworks server was derived from LanMan/X, the portable version of OS/2 LAN Manager.
Client Versions
There were multiple versions of the Pathworks client software, including:
These products mostly supported NetBIOS over DECnet[4].
With the slow decline in DECnet usage and the shipping of integrated Microsoft Windows Networking in Windows for Workgroups most of the Pathworks clients became unnecessary.
Server Versions
The server family consisted of:
- Pathworks for VAX/VMS/OpenVMS
- Pathworks for Ultrix[5]
- Pathworks for Digital Unix[6] (later Tru64 Unix)
- Pathworks for SCO UNIX[7]
- Pathworks for OS/2 server software
