The Nelson Giants are a basketball team that play in the National Basketball League (NBL). Their home games are played at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson.[1] However, between 2014 and 2015, the team played at nearby Saxton Stadium due to Trafalgar being classified as earthquake prone.[2] The Giants have won the NBL championship three times in their history, in 1994, 1998 and 2007. They are the only remaining original team in the New Zealand National Basketball League, as all other teams have spent at least one year out of the league, for various reasons.
The Giants are led by head coach Tim Fanning. Former Tall Blacks coach Nenad Vučinić is the owner and a former player, captain and coach of the Giants, winning championships as all four, the only person to do so. He also holds the NZNBL record for most wins. In their title winning 2007 season, American import Josh Pace led the team in scoring and was the league MVP.
The Giants have a loyal fan base, which is cheered on by a group of local hooligans known as the Nelson Giants Wannabes.
