My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission (Japanese: 僕のヒーローアカデミア THE MOVIE ワールドヒーローズミッション Hepburn: Boku no Hīrō Akademia Za Mūbī: Wārudo Hīrōzu Misshon?) is a Japanese animated superhero film, and the third film based on the manga My Hero Academia by Kōhei Horikoshi. The film is produced by Bones, directed by Kenji Nagasaki, and was released in Japan on August 6, 2021.

Production and release

The film was first hinted at in November 2020, when the official Twitter accounts for the My Hero Academia anime, films, and manga posted teaser visuals that spelled "He will meet the three musketeers" when put together.[6] In the first episode of the fifth season of the television series, the film's title and August 6, 2021, premiere date were revealed. It was also revealed that the film was produced by Bones, with direction from Kenji Nagasaki, scripts by Yōsuke Kuroda, character designs by Yoshihiko Umakoshi, and composing by Yuki Hayashi.[7] The film's main theme is "Empathy" performed by Asian Kung-Fu Generation.[8] Asian Kung-Fu Generation also performed the insert song for the film, "Flowers".[9] Funimation will screen the film in international theaters starting October 29, 2021.[10]

A special bonus manga by Kōhei Horikoshi was given to the first one million people to see the film in Japanese theaters.[11] A novel adaptation of the film by Anri Takahashi released on the same day as the Japanese theatrical release.[12]

Reception

Critical reception

Richard Eisenbeis from Anime News Network praised the film's animation and plot hook, while criticizing the characters and their development.[13]

Box office

The film earned approximately ¥310 million on its opening day[14] and earned approximately ¥940 million after its opening weekend.[15] The film in its second weekend dropped from #2 to #3 in the box office and earned overall gross of ¥1,673,616,100.[16][17] The film earned ¥2.06 billion as of the 17th day in the Japanese box office, making it the highest-grossing film of the franchise.[18]
