Modal Soul is Nujabes' second solo album. It is a follow-up album to 2003's Metaphorical Music. Like its predecessor, it maintains a combination of hip hop and jazz. Features artists Cise Starr (of CYNE)., Akin, Terry Callier, Shing02, Substantial, Pase Rock, Apani B and Uyama Hiroto. Despite the fact that the album has contributing vocals from several artists, it is roughly classified as an instrumental hip hop album.

Modal Soul received very positive reviews, with critics calling it a very worthy follow up to Metaphorical Music.[citation needed]
