Miss World 1979, the 29th staging of the Miss World pageant, was held on 15 November 1979 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK. The winner was Gina Swainson from Bermuda. She was crowned by Miss World 1978, Silvana Suarez of Argentina. First runner-up was Carolyn Seaward representing the United Kingdom and second runner-up was Debbie Campbell from Jamaica. Swainson was a first runner-up in Miss Universe 1979 represented Bermuda and Carolyn Seaward was a second runner-up in same pageant represented England.

  • Gina Swainson is the second woman who actually competed in the Miss Universe pageant, placing as runner-up and eventually winning a rival pageant. The first to be Rosemarie Frankland in 1961.
  • Western Samoa, Danira Leilani Schwalger, was half-Maori and half-New Zealander, and was also the sister of Lenita Marian Schwalger who competed in Miss Universe 1981 in New York.
  • Isle of Man, Kathleen Mary Craig, was the eldest of Craig sisters who competed in Miss World.
  • 8 out of 15 countries which made it into the semi-finals, were not in the semi-finals last year: Malaysia (1963), Uruguay (1975), Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago (1976), and Brazil and Germany (1977). Bermuda and Panama made into the semi-finals for the first time in Miss World. The former debuted in 1971, while the latter in 1967. Ultimately, Bermuda won the title.
