Maurice Defourny
Maurice Defourny (16 November 1878 – 28 March 1953) was a Belgian philosopher and academic.
Biography
Maurice Defourny was born at Herstal. He attended the Catholic University of Leuven. Defourny was part of the first generation of laymen who registered to study at Leuven's Higher Institute of Philosophy. In 1902, he received his agrégation under Simon Deploige.[1] He undertook research stays in France — with Émile Durkheim and Gabriel Tarde — and in Germany — with Gustav von Schmoller and Adolph Wagner.[2]
In 1903 he returned to Leuven in order to teach a class on the history of social theories, a newly created professorship created at the Higher Institute of Philosophy. He was also charged with the course on social economics, both at the Institute and at the School of Agriculture.[2]
He joined the Leuven Philosophical Society and became full professor in 1909. The same year, he married Marie Gérard at the church of Saint Guibert. In 1912 he joined the Belgian Democratic League. In the post war period, Defourny succeeded Victor Brants in the chair of Political Economy.[2] He was Dean of the Law Faculty at Leuven from 1921 until 1923.[2]
