The Kogod School of Business, commonly referred to as Kogod, serves as the undergraduate and graduate business school at American University in Northwest Washington, DC. Kogod is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Kogod offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The graduate student population hovers around 500, and undergraduate around 1300. The student body is noted for its large international population. In 2013, Bloomberg Businessweek ranked Kogod #56 in the nation for Best Undergraduate Business Programs.[2]

History

Founded in 1955 as the School of Business Administration, the School was housed in the McKinley Building. In 1979, Robert Kogod, a major real estate developer and president of the Charles E. Smith Companies, made a major donation to rename the school the Robert P. and Arlene R. Kogod College of Business Administration. In 1999, the school moved into its current location, formerly the John Sherman Meyer Building, vacated by the Washington College of Law. The building received a major renovation, and the school changed its name to the Kogod School of Business. In 2009, the school opened a 20,000-square-foot (1,900 m2) expansion. This addition houses a Financial Services and Information Technology Lab, Behavioral Research Lab, a center for career development, seven additional classrooms, three breakout rooms, and a student lounge.

Kogod Tax Center

The Kogod Tax Center was launched in 2011, capitalizing off the school's respected MS in Taxation program. The research center promotes independent research and expands knowledge with respect to tax policy, tax planning and tax compliance for small and mid-size businesses, entrepreneurs and middle income taxpayers. Professor Donald Williamson serves as executive director; David Kautter is managing director. It is located near the main American University campus.

Curriculum

Undergraduate

Kogod undergraduates can choose from five degree programs: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Bachelor of Science in Business, Language and Culture, Bachelor of Science in Business and Entertainment, and Bachelor of Science in Finance.[3] Students majoring in business administration can specialize in the following areas: Accounting, Finance, Information Systems and Technology, International Business, International Finance, International Management, International Marketing, Management, Marketing, Real Estate, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Kogod also allows other University students to select an abbreviated study in business through a minor. Non-business majors are required to complete between 18 and 22 credit hours in either business administration, finance, information systems and technology, marketing or real estate.

The Kogod School of Business was recently ranked 56th by Bloomberg Businessweek for undergraduate business programs,[2] and 1st for sustainability.[4]

Graduate programs

Kogod offers several graduate degrees including both a Full-Time MBA and Professional MBA, Master of Science in Accounting, Master of Science in Analytics, Master of Science in Finance, Master of Science in Marketing, Master of Science in Real Estate, Master of Science in Sustainability Management, and Master of Science in Taxation. Also available are joint MA/MBA programs with the School of International Service and joint MBA/JD and LLM/MBA programs with the Washington College of Law. The Wall Street Journal ranked Kogod graduate programs #36 in their regional recruiter ranking.[5]

The Kogod MBA offers concentrations in Accounting, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Consulting, Marketing, Global Emerging Markets, Leadership and Strategic Human Capital, Management, and Real Estate. In addition, customized MBA concentrations can be formed through tailored curriculum and independent study opportunities.[6]

Kogod also offers graduate business certificates in Advanced Tax Concepts, Business Fundamentals, Entrepreneurship, Forensic Accounting, and Real Estate.

The Kogod School of Business is the first business school to be established in Washington DC.[7]

Study abroad

Kogod offers business experiences and programs abroad in high demand arenas for business in diverse global locations. Students may spend the semester or academic year in France (Skema Business School), Germany (WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management), Kuwait (Kuwait University), Monaco (International University of Monaco), and Italy (Arcadia University Rome Business Program). In addition, Kogod offers short-term (one to two week) International Management Practices courses in Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

Graduate international studies

Kogod also offers various opportunities for graduate students to study abroad. Traditional semesters abroad are offered at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management, one of Germany's top business schools, and ESCP Europe, rated the #3 management school in Europe by the Financial Times.[8]

Besides the traditional study abroad approach, Kogod also offers shorter experiences. These include International Dimensions in Management, a one to two-week trip offered in the end of both fall and spring semesters, as well as a European trip over spring break. Past trips have been to China, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, France, Vietnam, and the Czech Republic, among other destinations.[9]

Kogod Leadership and Applied Business

Kogod Leadership and Applied Business (K-LAB) programs include:

Road Scholars - an alternative spring break study tour that provides undergraduate students with a hands-on opportunity to experience business in the real world. Recent trips include Seattle, San Francisco, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago.

Washington Initiative - This two credit course provides undergraduate students the opportunity to serve as a consultant for a local charitable or non-profit organization. Past projects include Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund, Bread for the City, Hope and a Home, DC Central Kitchen, and Facilitating Leadership in Youth.

The Kogod Gartenhaus Financial Case Competition - graduate and undergraduate teams are given three days to solve a business case in front of judges from the local business community.
