Enteritis (entero- + -itis) is inflammation of the small intestine. It is most commonly caused by food or drink contaminated with pathogenic microbes.[1] Symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, dehydration, and fever.[1] Inflammation of related organs of the gastrointestinal system are:
- stomach and small intestine
- large and small intestine
Etymology and pronunciation
The word enteritis (/ˌɛntərˈaɪtᵻs/) uses combining forms of entero- and -itis, both New Latin from Greek, respectively from ἑντερον (enteron, small intestine) and -ιτις (-itis, inflammation).
