Javier Mariño
Javier Mariño[1] is the first novel by Gonzalo Torrente Ballester. Written in 1943, it has an autobiographical background as it narrates some events experienced by the author himself during the Spanish Civil War. Although it was allowed to be published after the elimination of some passages, it was later withdrawn from circulation by the Spanish government.
Synopsis
Javier is a young man of the Galician middle class, who leaves Madrid in view of the Spanish situation in the summer of 1936 and settles for a time in Paris. There he comes into contact with a young woman, Magdalena de Hauteville, an aristocrat and communist with whom he falls in love. After learning what is happening in Spain, he decides to leave for America to found a new city (like the Trojan hero Aeneas, founder of Rome), but finally changes his attitude and returns to Spain to support the rebels.
