Jacob Tremblay (born October 5, 2006) is a Canadian child actor. His breakout performance came for starring as Jack Newsome in Room (2015), for which he received critical acclaim and won the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer and the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role and was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

Early Life

Tremblay was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on October 5, 2006.[4] He was raised in the nearby city of Langley, British Columbia. He attended Gordon Greenwood Elementary. His father, Jason Tremblay, is a police detective, and his mother, Christina Candia Tremblay, is a homemaker. Tremblay's older sister, Emma, and younger sister, Erica, are also film actors.[5]

Career

In 2013, Tremblay made his film debut playing one of the lead roles as Blue Winslow in the live-action animated film The Smurfs 2, alongside Neil Patrick Harris.[6] The film was directed by Raja Gosnell and released on July 31, 2013 by Columbia Pictures.[7]

Tremblay portrayed Jack Newsome in the acclaimed drama film Room, co-starring with Brie Larson.[8] The film, directed by Lenny Abrahamson, premiered on September 4, 2015 at the Telluride Film Festival, and was released in cinemas on October 16, 2015, by A24 Films.[9] For his performance, he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, becoming the second youngest performer nominated for that award.

Tremblay has a supporting role in the psychological thriller Shut In, co-starring Naomi Watts and Oliver Platt.[10] Farren Blackburn directed the film, which is scheduled for a June 17, 2016 release.[11]

He starred in the lead role in the horror film Before I Wake, with Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane, set for release on April 8, 2016.[12] He also portrays Wes Firth in the adventure comedy-drama Burn Your Maps, starring alongside Vera Farmiga and Marton Csokas.[13]

Tremblay is slated to appear in the drama film The Book of Henry, directed by Colin Trevorrow.[14] He is also set to guest star as the younger version of the main character (Will Forte) on Fox's post-apocalyptic comedy series The Last Man on Earth.[15]

Personal life

Tremblay is an avid fan of the Star Wars franchise and named his dog after Daisy Ridley's character, Rey.[16]
