J&T Express (officially PT Global Jet Express[1]) is an Indonesian logistics company. Founded in 2015, the company is generally engaged in logistics and package delivery. J&T uses automated sorting warehouses in Indonesia and Singapore.[2] It received Indonesian Top Brand Award in 2018 and 2019.[3] As of June 2017, it was valued at 543 million dollars.[4]

History

J&T Express was founded in 2015 by Jet Lee and Tony Chen (former CEO and current of Oppo, respectively); hence, the company is called J&T.[5] After starting in Indonesia in 2015, it has already expanded to Malaysia, Vietnam in 2017, the Philippines and Thailand in 2018, Singapore and Cambodia in 2019, and China in 2020.[6] Its expansion in Singapore, Cambodia, and China are still under review. Future expansion remains unknown as they are still doing market research.[1] J&T Express has seen a rapid increase in business in Indonesia in the last years and has become the fourth biggest parcel company and the 8th unicorn in Indonesia.[7]

COVID-19 Pandemic

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, it has seen a increase of 50% in deliveries during Ramadhan 2020 compared to last year, handling up to 3 million packages each day.[8]

J&T Express has given aid packages to cities severely affected by the outbreak, such as Surabaya[9] and Tangerang.[10] Medical aid packages were also given to hospitals.

Controversy

After a video went viral of workers throwing packages in 2020, J&T Express Philippines stated that it would sanction personnel involved in mishandling the packages [11][12] Similar video showing J&T Express Indonesian workers also circulated on the internet in 2019.[13]

Media Konsumen, an Indonesian consumer complaints platform, received multiple letters addressing complaints about faulty sorting and lack of transparency and accountability in J&T Express delivery tracking, resulting in their packages being lost or sent to wrong delivery address.[14][15][16]

Another major incident happen on 4 February 2021. Malaysian social media was ablaze with videos of protests and rioting happening at J&T Express Malaysia warehouse. One clip showed workers throwing parcels while protesting in a warehouse, while another allegedly in a Perak warehouse showed mountains of undelivered parcels and unloaded delivery trucks. The issue arose from a change in the commission system, which allegedly drastically reduced the earnings of a delivery rider.[17]
