Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. A referendum on creating an Islamic Republic was held in Iran on 30 and 31 March 1979.[1] The referendum asked "Islamic Republic Yes or no?".[2] Although some groups objected to the wording and choice and boycotted the referendum,[3] it was approved by 99% of voters.

Following this victory, the 1906 constitution was declared invalid and a new constitution for an Islamic state was created and ratified by a referendum in December 1979. The new constitution consisted primarily of the ideas Khomeini presented in his work Islamic Government: Governance of the Jurist.
