Gilvan de Souza Lemos CavMM (1 July 1928 – 1 August 2015) was a Brazilian writer.

Biography

Gilvan Lemos was born at São Bento do Una in the agreste region of Pernambuco. He moved to Recife shortly before his 21st birthday. In 1956 he won the Vânia Souto de Carvalho Award from the State Education Department for Noturno Sem Música, his first novel, written in 1951 and published by Editora Nordeste. He gained national notoriety in 1968 with Emissários do Diabo, published by Civilização Brasileira.

In 1993, Lemos was inducted by President Itamar Franco into the Order of Military Merit with the rank of Special Knight.

With 25 published books, including novellas, novels and short stories, as well as participation in anthologies, Lemos won several regional and national awards and had part of his work re-released by Cepe Editora between 2012 and 2015, including Os Olhos da Treva, O anjo do Quarto Dia, Emissários do Diabo and Jutaí Menino. His bibliography also includes A Noite dos Abraçados (1975), Os Pardais Estão Voltando (1983) and Morcego Cego (1998), among others.

Retired as a civil servant, he devoted himself exclusively to literature until his death in Recife, aged 87.

He was sworn in, by proxy, as a full member of the Pernambuco Academy of Letters (chair 26), on 27 February 2012. At the session chaired by Fátima Quintas, he was represented by his niece, Lívia Valença, because he had suffered a fall the week before, when he fractured his right ankle.
