Giacomo Martina SJ (12 December 1924 – 6 February 2012) was an Italian presbyter, lecturer and historian, expert in the History of Christianity.

Biography

Member of the Society of Jesus since the end of 1939, as a historian of the Church he taught for over thirty years in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He has dedicated his work as a researcher to the figure of Pope Pius IX, but also to the events of the Society of Jesus in Italy. Among his most successful works, the History of the Church from Luther to the present day, structured in four volumes in which he deals with the time of the Reformation, absolutism, liberalism and finally the contemporary age until the events following the Second Vatican Council.
