Gandara (Sinhalese: ගන්දර, Tamil: கந்தறை) is a village in Matara Districton the southern coast of Sri Lanka, 168 km from Colombo. It is one of the important village in Matara city.[1] It was slightly affected by the Asian tsunami in December 2004.

History

Gandara historically belongs to the area called Ruhuna, one of the three kingdoms in Sri Lanka (Thun Sinhalaya). The temple in the village is also built by ancient kings and now it is a very popular sacred place among the Buddhists in the area. The mosque in the village is built by the villagers in late 1840s. The Buddhists and Muslims will live peacefully in Gandara.
