Freeway Airport (FAA LID: W00) is a privately owned, public-use airport located two miles (3 km) northwest of the central business district of Mitchellville, in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States.[1]
History
Freeway Airport became active in June 1961, in Prince George's County, 2 miles NW of Mitchellville, Maryland. Freeway has maintained an active flight school operation since its founding, operating aircraft such as Alon Ercoupes,[2] Cessna 152's, and Cessna 172's. Freeway Airport is privately owned by Freeway Airport Inc., but is open to the general public. The airfield is staffed everyday of the year, from 8 am until dusk, except on major holidays. The airport is located on 100 acres of land. The airport has 75 aircraft currently based at its facilities. The facilities include a lighted wind indicator, airframe services, powerplant services, and fuel available, but there is no control tower present on the airfield. The airfield has a single asphalt runway measuring 2,420 feet in length, which is in good condition.[1]
Hani Hanjour, one of the hijackers involved in the events of September 11, 2001 attempted to rent an aircraft at Freeway Airport after claiming to be qualified to do so.[3] A month before the attack, "instructors at Freeway Airport in Bowie flew with him and deemed him unfit to rent a plane by himself".[4]
In February 2006, a Cessna 172 crashed at Freeway Airport due to poor visibility.[5]
