Florida National University, is a for-profit college established as Florida International Institute in the city of Hialeah in Miami-Dade County in 1988. The student body is diverse, though primarily Hispanic.[1] In January 1993, the college received initial candidacy based on the Commission on College’s first visiting report. A second Commission on Colleges’ Visiting Committee team evaluated the institution in 1995. Finally, in January 1997, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) granted Florida National College its accreditation status and was reaffirmed in January 2002. In December of 2008, the Commission accredited the institution at a more advanced degree level (II) to award baccalaureate degrees. The institution successfully went through its reaffirmation visit in September 2011. Florida National College officially changed its name to Florida National University March 24, 2012, after receiving approval by its accrediting agency to offer programs at a more advanced degree level.

Academics

FNU offers Associate's, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and master's degrees in addition to Career Education Diplomas and certificates in a variety of subject matters.[2] All classroom instruction is conducted in English.[citation needed]

Student population

In 2012 the school had over 200 graduates. There are more than 1500 full-time students.[3][4] The school is predominantly (approximately 94%) Hispanic.[5]

Athletics

In 2013 the school initiated an athletic program with the sport of Men's basketball with Scott Schmidt appointed as the head coach and Athletic Director. The school adopted the nickname Conquistadors and will compete in the USCAA.[6] The Conquistadors basketball team played their first game against Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL on October 26, 2013, losing by a score of 98-51.[7] In the fall of 2015, the school added men's soccer and Women's volleyball.

Name dispute

In May 2013, Florida International University sued Florida National University over the similarity of the institution's names. Florida International University lost the[8] trademark infringement lawsuit filed against Florida National University[9]
