Einheitslokomotive (literally: 'standard locomotive') was the name given to standard classes of German steam locomotives (the Einheitsdampflokomotiven) built from 1925 under the direction of the Deutsche Reichsbahn to certain common designs, and also to standard German electric locomotives (the Einheits-Elektrolokomotiven) produced after 1952 for the Deutsche Bundesbahn. They were built with standard design features and generally produced in large batches, often by several manufacturers in the different German states. Examples include DRG classes 64 and 86 and the DB classes E 10 and E 40.
