Echostage is a nightclub that doubles as a concert venue built with electronic dance music (EDM) in mind. It has bars, dance floor, outdoor area, and stage space for live music performances.[6] It is Washington D.C.'s largest indoor nightclub concert venue.[7] The venue is 30,000 square feet and accommodates the mostly standing room with large LED visual displays to light up the venue.[8] It opened in September 2012.[9]The owners are Antonis Karagounis and Pete Kalamoutsos, who have also opened other venues in D.C. such as, Club Glow and Panorama Productions.[10] The site was renovated from a dance club venue called D.C. Star, to also be able to accommodate live bands, especially emcees and electronic dance music musicians.[11][12]

History

It has a German sound system, which is the first to be used in a venue on the East Coast.[13] It also has a photo pit and two large bars that line the sides of the dance floor.[14] There are "bottle service" mezzanines to view the shows from above the stage.[15] The sound booth is raised.[16] The stage is permanent and there is an LED wall to backlight it.[17][18]

The venue was established as a "breeding ground for local performers."[19][20]

The Owners

Antonis Karagounis was born in Athens, Greece and later moved to Washington, D.C. in 1993.[21] Karagounis first launched Panorama Productions (2003), an event promotion company. He later graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.A. degree in Political Science and then George Washington University with a master's degree in European Studies.[22][23]

Karagounis’s and Pete Kalamoutsos first collaborated through starting Panorama. Kalamoutsos served as music director for the entertainment company.[24] In 1999, they collaboraed to create Glow, a weekly electronic music event in Washington, D.C.. In 2007, Glow branched out into larger-scale EDM events with other concert venues such as the DC Armory.[25] Karagounis has also managed and owned some of the area's other nightlife buildings, venues, and businesses, including Lima Restaurant and Lounge, Ultrabar (2005), Barcode (2010), Josephine (2011), and www.dcclubbing.com, a D.C. nightlife social network.[26][27]

Pete Kalamoutsos is a local and was born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area.[28] Pete and Karagounis met each other while both attending the University of Maryland. Kalamoutsos helped in creating a partnership between Glow and the 9:30 Club (IMP).[29][30]

In September of 2012, Kalamoutsos joined with Karagounis again to open Echostage.[31][32]
