Duplicate is an Indian Bollywood action comedy film released on 8 May 1998. The movie was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and stars Shahrukh Khan in a double role opposite Juhi Chawla and Sonali Bendre. It was produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and marks Shahrukh's first of five collaborations with the production company. The storyline is similar to the 1935 movie The Whole Town's Talking. Hollywood film The One starring Jet Li has similiraities with this film.

Plot
Bablu Chaudhary (Shah Rukh Khan), a bubbly young man, is an aspiring chef. He gets a job as the lead chef at a hotel and meets the charming Sonia Kapoor (Juhi Chawla), the hotel manager. They bond and Bablu falls in love with her. Meanwhile, Manu, (Shah Rukh Khan in a double role), Bablu's lookalike, is a ruthless criminal who has escaped from jail to kill his partners, who have betrayed him. One day, when Bablu takes Sonia out for lunch, he gets arrested because the police think that Bablu is Manu. Bablu is able to prove his true identity but not before Manu hears of his duplicate and decides to take his place by killing him. There is a lot of confusion about who is who by all associated with the two men, including Sonia, Bablu's mother Bebe (Farida Jalal), and Manu's girlfriend, Lily (Sonali Bendre). In a final confrontation between Manu and Bablu, Lily shoots Manu dead after realizing he is not good at heart and does not truly love her like Bablu loves Sonia.

Duplicate grossed ₹17.39 crore (US$2.6 million) in India and $1 million (₹4.10 crore) in other countries, for a worldwide total of ₹21.49 crore (US$3.2 million), against its ₹9.50 crore (US$1.4 million) budget. It had a worldwide opening week of ₹9.44 crore (US$1.4 million).[2] It is the 12th-highest-grossing film of 1998 worldwide.[3]
Overseas
It grossed $375,000 (₹1.53 crore) in its first week and earned a total of $1 million (₹4.10 crore) outside India.[2] Overseas, It is the 3rd-highest-grossing film of 1998 behind Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ($6.3 million (₹26.61 crore)) and Dil Se.. ($2.32 million (₹9.86 crore)), which were also Shah Rukh Khan starrer.[4]
