Dubrajpur (Bengali: দুবরাজপুর) is a town and a municipality in Suri Sadar subdivision of Birbhum District in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Geography

Near Dubrajpur is the Mama Bhagne pahar. A large number of large sized rocks are found in the area. Two remarkable of these rocks are known as Mama and Bhagne (maternal uncle and nephew). Now, the entire area is known as Mama Bhagney.[4] Mama Bhagne pahar is now a picnic spot.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[5] Dubrajpur had a population of 32,752. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Dubrajpur has an average literacy rate of 56%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 65% and, female literacy is 46%. In Dubrajpur, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transport

Dubrajpur is 35 km from Andal and 19 km from Suri on the Andal-Sainthia Branch Line of Eastern Railway.[6] It is on Panagarh–Morgram Highway.

History

Hetampur, a small town is very close from Dubrajpur, is a place of historical importance. The kings of Hetampur ruled this region earlier. The Hetampur Rajbari is still there and can be visited. The famous Bengali film director, late Satyajit Ray, known for changing the course of Indian cinema, chose this place for shooting a scene in his distinguished cinema, "Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen".
