An apostolic vicariate of the Roman Catholic Church is an ecclesiastical missionary jurisdiction, analogous to a proper diocese, under a titular bishop, but organised into missions rather than parishes. It's exempt, not part of an ecclesiastical province, like the stage of apostolic prefecture which often precedes it, and meant to mature until it can be promoted to (usually suffragan) bishopric.

The Eastern Catholic counterpart is an (apostolic or patriarchal) exarchate.
