Capalaba Central is a regional shopping centre located 25 kilometres (16 mi) south-east of Brisbane in the suburb of Capalaba in Queensland, Australia. With a lettable area of 36,601m2, the centre is anchored by a number of major outlets, including Woolworths, Coles, Big W and Event Cinemas, in addition to over 95 specialty stores including Homeart. Car parking is available for up to 1,665 vehicles, with approximately a third undercover.
History
The Capalaba Central Shopping Centre was opened in 1994 after being developed by the Leda Property Group. They subsequently sold the center to MPEC Australia for $77.5 million, who then invested an additional $15 million expanding the property. In 1997, Shin Yen Pty Ltd, a Taiwanese investment company, entered into negotiations with MPEC to purchase the centre, reportedly offering $82.5 million. Negotiations broke down, but in February 1998 MPEC were forced to sell off most of their Australian assets. Shin Yen were then able to purchase the property for $73.3 million.[1] However, Shin Yen only retained the centre until 1999,[2] when it was sold again for a sum of $85 million.[3]
During 2008, the Capalaba Central Shopping Centre underwent a $50 million redevelopment. The redevelopment added additional undercover carparking as well as the space for Harvey Norman and the relocation of the Event Cinemas entrance.[4]
The centre was sold from Dexus Property Group to Shayher for $148.5M in 2015.[5]
Transport
The shopping centre is served by several bus routes via the Capalaba Bus Interchange, from which the centre is a two-minute walk. In addition, the Cleveland railway line stops at the nearby Birkdale railway station from which it is possible to catch a bus to the interchange. The centre also provides parking for 1,665 cars, along with bike racks and a taxi rank.[6]
