Breadline Africa, one of the biggest suppliers of converted shipping containers for poverty relief in Southern Africa, has provided more than 280 containers to poverty stricken communities since its establishment in 1993. The non-profit organisation, which is based in Cape Town, South Africa, believes that every child has the capacity to do something amazing with his or her life. When a child’s imagination is unlocked, possibilities are opened up, allowing them to choose a path for their own future. Breadline Africa enables this journey by providing initiatives and infrastructure to support childhood development in Southern Africa. The renovated containers are used as early childhood development centres (nursery schools), primary school libraries, community kitchens and ablution blocks.
All donations received further our work and we continuously seek corporate sponsorship of our containers - visit [1].
History
Breadline Africa was established in Cape Town in 1993. Recognising that a great deal of grassroots development had to take place as a part of the nation-building process, and that government structures would not be in a position to provide all of the resources to facilitate this process, Breadline Africa set about drawing attention to the needs of the community-based organisations that it partnered with; while giving donors the reassurance that their financial resources would be used appropriately and to maximum effect.
What we do
Since 2013, Breadline has focused its attention on projects benefiting children and youth in literacy and early childhood development. This is clustered into three main areas:
- Mandela Day Library Project: Container library project, in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, that provides libraries in refurbished shipping containers for under-resourced primary schools across South Africa;
- Early Childhood Development Centres (Nursery Schools): Infrastructure projects for pre-school facilities, providing classrooms, ablution facilities or kitchens using converted shipping containers;
- Initiatives and special community projects: Seaside outings, feeding programmes and school stationery packs.
