Birati is a neighbourhood in the North Dumdum municipality area, in the North 24 Parganas district in the state of West Bengal, India. It is located at the east of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), beside the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum. It is considered to be a part of Greater Kolkata or KMA, for which KMDA is the planning and development authority.[1]
Birati's closeness to dumdum junction also enables residents to travel by the metro railways.
Etymology
The most popular thesis for the emergence of the name 'Birati' is the military forces used to take a rest in this place during their movements and for that place was named as biroti which means 'rest' in Bengali. Over time the name changed to 'Birati'.
Geography and Locality
Birati is bound by the Jessore Road in the East, Nimta in the West, New Barrackpore in the North and Durganagar in the South. It has a station .
Education
Birati is well enriched with educationists and educational institutes .Birati High School (boys'), Birati Mahajati Vidyamandir (boys', girls'), Uttar Dum Dum Vidyapith (boys', girls'), Khalisha Kota High School, Sarat Bose Academy (co-ed), Birati Vidyalaya (boys', girls'), National English School, Nivedita English School, Dr. Annie Besant Institute (co-ed) are some of the Higher Secondary schools. There are also a number of government and privately run primary and Kindergarten schools like Sudhindranath Sishu Vidhyalaya, Uttarayan Sishu Vidyayatan, Keyboard Kidz, KidZee etc. Mrinalini Dutta Mahavidyapith is the only college in Birati, more commonly known as the Birati college.
Transport
Birati is on the Sealdah–Bangaon railway line which connects Birati with Barasat, Habra, Basirhat, Hasnabad, Bongaon and Kolkata. It is very close to and is near to the NSCB INTL Airport. Belghoria Expressway or popularly called Delhi Road connects Jessore Road (NH-34) at east near Airport and NH-6/NH-2 at west near Bally at Hoogly District.
On 4 February 2009 Former Chief Minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee inaugurated Birati Flyover named Manik Bandopadhyay Setu at Birati station. It connects east and west part of MB Road (Madhusudan Banerjee Road, which is the main road of Birati) opening a much waited route for buses and heavy transports. There is a newly constructed, public swimming pool in birati, near the Birati Mini Bus Terminus.
