Basin Street Records is a Grammy Award-winning independent record label based in New Orleans, LA.
About
Basin Street Records was founded in 1997 by Mark Samuels and Tom Thompson. The creation of the record label arose out of a mutual agreement between the two to release a live album for New Orleans Jazz Trumpeter/Vocalist Kermit Ruffins, who was being managed by Tom Thompson at the time. In mid 1998 Mark Samuels bought out Tom Thompson’s interest in the company. He remains president of the company today.
From its inception through 2016, Basin Street Records has signed twelve Louisiana-based artists.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded Basin Street Records' office and Mark Samuels' home. The company never stopped its operations although the 6 full time staff all went their separate ways. Mark continued to operate the company from "computers in coffee shops" while rebuilding his home and office in New Orleans.
The artist roster in order of signing includes: Kermit Ruffins, Los Hombres Calientes, Jason Marsalis, Irvin Mayfield, Dr. Michael White, The Headhunters, Henry Butler, Jon Cleary, Theresa Andersson, Jeremy Davenport, Rebirth Brass Band and Davell Crawford. Four of the artists are Grammy award nominees (3 of those have won Grammys).
The musicians of Basin Street Records represent a variety of styles of music, although most play some variety of jazz such as: Traditional New Orleans jazz, Latin jazz, New Orleans brass band music, as well as contemporary and modern jazz. Other musical styles represented include: blues, R&B, funk, indie rock, adult contemporary, and lounge music[1]
Awards
