Banton lies in the northern portion of the Sibuyan Sea, and is equidistant between Marinduque Island to the north and Tablas Island to the south. It is composed of the main island of Banton and the uninhabited islands of Bantoncillo, Carlota and Isabel, the last two of which are collectively known as the Dos Hermanas Islands (Two Sisters). There is also an islet a few meters from Tabonan Beach on the northwest of the island.[1] The main settlement of Poblacion lies on the northeastern portion of Banton Island.

Banton, including Bantoncillo and the Dos Hermanas, have a total land area of 3,248 hectares.[2] Based on rock petrology, the island is a dormant volcano which lies at the southernmost portion of the Pleistocene-Quaternary West Luzon volcanic arc and may have been active during the Pliocene period.[3] Because of its volcanic origin, the island has a mountainous, rocky topography, with very few patches of flat land suitable for farming. The island's highest elevation, Mount Ampongo, rises at 596 meters.[4]

The island is known for its white sand beaches such as Macat-ang, Tabonan, and Tambak beaches. It is also the site of the Guyangan Cave System, a network of seven caves, some of which contained remains of precolonial settlers in the island. The caves were declared an Importabt Cultural Property by the National Museum in 2013.[5] The island also has well preserved coral reefs which are perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving such as the Northwest Wall and Times Square.
